What is YOUR Sentence?  Search for your mission statement.

Clare Boothe Luce was a congresswoman in the 1960’s and once, while visiting President John F. Kennedy at the White House, told him that “a great man is one sentence.” He can be so well summed up in a single sentence that you don’t have to hear his name to know who is being talked about. “He preserved the union and freed the slaves” or “He lifted us out of a great depression and helped to win a World War.” You know that its Lincoln and FDR.

She was thinking he was trying to do too much and his priorities were getting muttled. She asked him to focus on what the country needed most at the time.

What is Your Sentence?  Your Mission Statement?

You may not have dreams or aspirations of being a historical figure, but what do you want to be remembered for, if even just in your small group of family and friends.

If you’re not clear on what your sentence might be, here’s a hint; It’s probably pretty close to what you value and are passionate about.

To get clearer, ask yourself a couple of questions:

  • What am I so passionate about, it would get me out of bed at 2am, or keep me up late at night?
  • What did I want to be when I was a child?
  • What put’s me in a flow so that I lose track of time and can work for hours without realizing it,
  • What is something that provides service to people?
  • What brings value to people?

Answer all of these questions and you may start to see a pattern. Everyone is “hardwired” with a unique contribution to the world and It’s probably pretty close to what you value and are passionate about.

Example: Mike’s Mission Statement

I asked my fiancé, Mike, these questions and these are his answers:

What am I so passionate about it would get me out of bed at 2am, or keep me up late at night?

Napoleon Hill in his classic book, Think and Grow Rich, says the most important factor in success is having a “definiteness of purpose” that is the knowledge of what one wants and a burning desire to possess it.

So get clear on your sentence; have definiteness of purpose, and make it your personal mission statement. Once you have your sentence, eliminate doing anything that doesn’t line up with it.

Most days there should be an ease and flow because you’re aligned with your passion and are providing value to others, but for those days you aren’t feeling as motivated, your personal mission statement will get you through.
