What is SEO ranking? Why is it something I should know as a business owner?

Those are two questions I still hear many business owners ask today. It may be astonishing to those already familiar with SEO, but a lot of people are still confused by it.

Worse yet, they don’t grasp what it can do for them.

That’s why I’m going to address the questions I mentioned above in this article.

Today, I’ll talk about what is SEO ranking. Furthermore, I’ll detail exactly why it’s something business owners can’t ignore nowadays.

What Is SEO Ranking and Why Does It Matter?

To understand what is SEO ranking, we need to answer “What is SEO” first.

SEO is search engine optimization. It’s a type of digital marketing that aims to increase the visibility of a website on search engine results pages or SERPs.

It also aims to get more high-quality traffic to that website. “High-quality traffic” refers to people who belong to that website’s target audience.

In other words, it refers to people who are likely to be interested in the content of that website.

Now that we’ve defined SEO, we can move on to answering the questions we asked at the beginning of this article.

What Is SEO Ranking?

Let’s start with the question of what is SEO ranking.

SEO ranking is basically a website’s or webpage’s rank in the SERPs.

Let’s take an example so you better understand what is SEO ranking.

Say I go to Google’s homepage and run a search for “Grumpy Cat”.

Google returns to me several million results organized in a list that spans several pages. These are the SERPs.

Now if I ask “what is SEO ranking” for any of these results, the answer would be how high it placed in the list.

So, for instance, if we talk about what is SEO ranking for Wikipedia’s page on “Grumpy Cat”, we could say it’s “first” because it’s at the top of the SERPs.

In other words, Wikipedia’s page ranks first for this search.

SEO Ranking and SEO’s Aims

Now that you know what is SEO ranking, let’s talk about how it relates to the goals of SEO.

As I said earlier, SEO aims to get a website better exposure online and as a result of that, more qualified visitors.

SEO ranking is integral to that because it determines how likely people running a search are to click on a website if it’s a search result.

For example, going back to our “Grumpy Cat” search, what are the chances of a person clicking on the first 5 results in the SERPs?

What are the chances of him clicking on the twentieth SERP result, by comparison?

Obviously, a person is more likely to click on the first 5 SERP results than the 20th or even 30th.

After all, results with higher SEO ranking are placed higher up in the SERPs. You see them quicker, which means they’re more convenient to a searcher.

This is why knowing what is SEO ranking is integral to SEO. The higher the SEO ranking of a website/webpage, the better for its SEO goals.

What Does SEO Have to Do with My Business?

So now you see why understand what is SEO ranking is important for SEO.

Now we come to the next question after “what is SEO ranking”. Specifically, what does SEO have to do with business?

First off, it should come as no surprise if I say most consumers now do product research online.

Even you have likely done it at some point — searched Google for ideas about something you want to purchase.

So you naturally want your business and brand to show up for people doing the same, only with your products/services.

And no, you don’t need to have an online store for this.

In fact, research shows that 88% of consumers research products online before buying in-store. So even brick-and-mortar businesses can still benefit from an online presence.

SEO can build that online presence for you. It ensures that your online assets (like websites or webpages) are more easily found by potential customers.

Again, it does that by improving their SEO rank. In other words, it pushes your brand to the top of your potential customers’ search results.

In a sense, you might say the answer to what is SEO ranking for a business is thus “a rough estimate of your visibility to consumers on search engines”.

What Are the Benefits of a High SEO Ranking?

If you truly understood what is SEO ranking, the answers to this should be obvious.

First, a good SEO ranking increases your chances of making a sale. After all, if more people visit your website, you have more prospective customers.

If you pair a high ranking with a good conversion funnel, in fact, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll see a massive uptick in your sales.

There’s also the fact that a good SEO ranking helps you build your brand’s authority online.

As I said earlier in explaining what is SEO ranking, sites with good rank are placed higher in the SERPs.

When that happens, search engine users tend to see them as more trustworthy (because Google seems to consider them trustworthy).

That helps you build your brand’s credibility and reputation. That’s why understanding what is SEO ranking and how to improve it can be good for business.

How to Improve Your SEO Ranking

After business owners learn what is SEO ranking and what it can do for their business, this is usually the next thing they ask me.

“How can I improve my SEO ranking?”

If you’ve read any of my other posts on search engine optimization or digital marketing, you know that there are a lot of ways to do this.

That’s because search engines like Google consider a lot of factors in their algorithm for ranking search results.

You can learn more about this by taking a look some of my articles, like my expert guide to SEO for beginners or my post on how to improve Google ranking with organic SEO.

For now, however, I’ll give you a few of the elementary techniques to get you started. You can try these to move up the SERPs now that you know what is SEO ranking.

1) Publish Only Quality Content

Search engines generally prefer high-quality content. That means you should steer clear of peppering your website with spammy or “thin” material.

The idea is to offer something that has genuine value to the visitor (or potential customer).

To do that, do some research to find out what your target audience is interested in. Find out what they want or need to know — then produce content that serves their wants/needs.

2) Make Sure Your Pages Load Quickly

The speed at which webpages load on an Internet browser is actually one of the factors most search engines check when ranking results.

The faster a page loads, the better for its SEO ranking.

That’s because most people don’t like waiting too long for a webpage to load.

So to take account of that, search engines give preference to webpages that load speedily.

3) Be Mobile-Responsive

If you’re not sure what this means, it’s just a fancy way of saying your website should display properly on mobile browsers.

That’s because a lot of people now access websites using their smartphones.

If your website isn’t mobile-responsive, it won’t show properly on small devices. That ruins the user experience.

This is an especially important ranking factor if you’re optimizing for Google’s SERPs, by the way. That’s because Google actually does something called mobile-first indexing.

That means that when Google indexes your site (i.e. adds it to its web search database), it indexes the mobile version of it first.

4) Build a Good Backlink Profile

Backlinks are just links from another website that lead to yours.

Sites with high SEO ranking usually have a lot of good backlinks. These are backlinks from authoritative (and non-spammy) websites leading to theirs.

Why do search engines consider these? Because they indicate that your website is trusted by others and considered a valuable reference.

Building backlinks usually involves reaching out to other website owners or offering to write content (guest post) for them in exchange for a backlink.

However, the simplest way to do it is just to publish excellent content. You might say the best content builds backlinks by itself.

Final Thoughts on SEO Ranking and Business

In this article, I’ve shown you what is SEO ranking. It’s a measurement of where a webpage or website is placed in the SERPs.

In answering what is SEO ranking, I’ve also shown you what SEO is and why SEO is relevant to business nowadays.

SEO is important because so many consumers now conduct product or service research on the Web. SEO helps brands get the attention of the consumers researching offerings like theirs.

I showed you how this relates to the answer to “what is SEO ranking”.

To be exact, I showed that a high SEO ranking can help you get more prospective customers and build brand credibility.

This is why it pays for business owners to know what is SEO ranking and how to improve it. They can do that by trying any of the methods I mentioned above, after explaining what is SEO ranking:

  • Publish only high-quality content.
  • Make sure your pages load quickly.
  • Be mobile-responsive.
  • Build a good backlink profile.

All of these can help with a business website or webpage’s SEO ranking.
