What Are Backlinks?  And 7 Ways How to Create Them.

If you are just getting started blogging you probably have heard of “backlinks“.  But what are backlinks?

Backlinks, also known as inbound links or incoming links, are links from other websites to your website. We have already talked about using keywords (on-page SEO) to help you to rank in Google. When you optimize your on-page SEO elements it helps Google understand what your blog post is all about. Google then indexes your posts in its search engine with the keywords on that post.

But even though Google may know what your blog post is all about it doesn’t mean your post will be on page one… you won’t really make it to the top of Google without back links. Backlinks create some authority for the blog post because it shows that people are referencing what you wrote. Google wants to end search. And Google assumes that if you have backlinks then your material is remarkable, then people should have a chance to find your material.

Now We Know What Are Backlinks, How Do We Create Them?

You can wait for those links to naturally build up as people slowly discover your post… but that could take years. That is why you need to create your own backlinks.

In this article we’ll talk about the basics of building links to your blog posts. Here are some basic tips for getting started link building.

1. Ask for Links

One of the best ways to get back links, especially when you are starting out, is to ask people you know if they can link to your material. If they use a hyperlinked target keyword in the other person’s website as the anchor text (the text being used to link to your site), then it will help you climb in the rankings.

People you can ask include friends and family, your mentor, customers you have built relationships with, syndication coops (where you trade links between people in a group), partners, etc.

2. Guest Blog On A Similar Niche Blog

When I started I did some guest blogging. When you negotiate to guest blog, ask for some links back to your own site (typically 1-3 links) in the author bio section. As long as you material is relevant, your backlinks will give your site a lot of credit. Guest blogging is also a great way to establish yourself as a industry leader and will also get some traffic from the other blog to your site.

3. Create Linkable Content

Creating content regularly should be your number one priority for your website. I advocate blogging daily. You need to create content that is interesting and that people will want to link to. Some tips for creating content that will help entice people to link to it are:

  • Use relevant keywords people are searching for
  • Start your post title with “How to”
  • Include benefit to reader in title (examples include “get more traffic” or “increase sales”)
  • Be unique and interesting
  • Use numbers in the title (like “5 easy ways”)

4. Link to Your Own Content

Yup, that’s right. You can create backlinks by linking to your own content. Each blog post is its own webpage. Therefore you can have each webpage link to each other. Keep the links to other posts that are related to the topic on the present blog post. If you don’t do this, it is like telling Google that you don’t even think your material is worth linking to… and what do you think the end result will be?

Linking to your own content also helps keep the visitors on your website longer as they explore articles similar to the topic they were interested in.

5. Interview an Industry Expert Who Has A Website

If you interview an industry expert, be sure to thank them and then send them a link to the interview blog post you created. If you do this, they will very likely create a link to your blog post in order to promote themselves.

6. Add links From Your Social Media Profiles

You should be using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and all the other social media profiles you have to create backlinks back to your website. You can do this from both your profile (to your website main url) and from individual posts to your content.

7. Become a Product Reviewer

Search for chances to become a product reviewer, like on Amazon where you can leave comments on most products. If you choose a relevant product (that is related to your blog post) you then may be able to leave a link back to your blog post after you create your review. This will help establish you as an expert AND build backlinks to your blog.
