Website search engine optimization isn’t something everyone masters easily. Sometimes, no matter what you do, your website search engine optimization still sucks at the end of the day.

I know how much it sucks to not know what’s wrong with your website search engine optimization. When I was new to SEO myself, I spent countless hours trying to diagnose issues in mine.

That’s why I’m going to help you figure out what’s going wrong with your website search engine optimization now. Here I’ll show you all those things that people often overlook in on-page SEO.

That way, you won’t have to waste any more time trying to fix problems you can’t even identify. Instead, you can focus immediately on the weaker points of your website SEO.

Why Isn’t Your On-Site Search Engine Optimization Working?

On-site, or website search engine optimization, is SEO found directly on your website.

That means that on-site website search engine optimization doesn’t include the SEO practices you might be doing outside your website, like backlink building.

Now, you might be thinking that website search engine optimization just means you just have to apply SEO to your home page.

In actuality, on-site website search engine optimization requires more effort than that.

For example, you shouldn’t rely only on the text on your home page for your website search engine optimization. In fact, even your website appearance and format can affect your website search engine optimization.

There are a lot of factors to take into account with website search engine optimization. That’s why there are a lot of things that can go wrong with it too.

Whether business owners admit it or not, mobile designs for websites are rarely prioritized. Most of the time, business owners only care about desktop designs for their website search engine optimization.

You should take note that your website’s desktop design will look different on mobile devices. Most of the time, these desktop designs will cause pages to look too congested.

Your Visitors Aren’t Encouraged to Stay Longer

You should remember that site visitors will only stay on a page for around 15 seconds unless they are encouraged to stay longer.

  • Insert an interesting video.

You could also prompt your visitors to submit their emails. You can do this by showing that you can send them useful information through emails.

Having a collection of emails also helps build your mailing list. This mailing list can then receive direct updates from you.

Your Site Loads Slowly

One of the reasons visitors may leave your site quickly is that it takes forever to load.

And if a user will most likely only stay on a page for 15 seconds, you have limited time to present a reason for them to stay.

As mentioned before, you don’t want your visitors to immediately click off your website. To avoid this, according to HubSpot, your website should be able to load within 1.5 seconds.

So, you should check your website in order to see how fast it usually loads. Luckily, you can fix your website loading speed through a number of ways:

  • Reducing redirects.
  • Leveraging browser caching.
  • Improving server response time.
  • Employing a content distribution network (CDN).
  • Improving your media and images.

You Don’t Have a Meta Description

Next, one other reason why your website search engine optimization might not be working is that you don’t have a Meta Description.

To clarify, Meta Descriptions are bits of text that are supposed to encourage users to visit your website. They’re vital parts of website search engine optimization.

Your Meta Descriptions are as important as Titles. If you don’t have a Meta Description, visitors won’t know what to expect when they click the link to your website.

Often, they will be discouraged by this, and they’ll move on to the next search result. If you’re a user with a search query, you would want to know what you’ll see first before clicking a link too.

On the other hand, your Meta Description might not be optimized even if you have one. Maybe you’re just throwing in any type of description without thinking about website search engine optimization.

So, make sure that your Meta Descriptions also have your keywords, just like your Titles. But remember not to stuff your Meta Description with keywords so it won’t look spammy.

You should also keep your Meta Descriptions shorter than 160 characters (spaces included). Providing a longer Meta Description causes the text to get cut off.

So, make your Meta Description concise but also click-worthy.

Your Word Count Isn’t High Enough

While we’re on the topic of text, we should also take a look at your website search engine optimization content.

But we won’t be focusing on your keywords—instead, we’ll talk about your word count.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is well known to be focused on keywords. However, your word count also plays a large role in determining how high you will rank on Search Engine Result Pages or SERPs.

Fundamentally, there is no minimum word count. However, a study has shown that longer website search engine optimization content tends to rank higher on Google’s result pages.

However, you shouldn’t just focus on making your content long. Doing so will most likely lead you to just typing out unnecessary additions to your content.

Instead, you should focus on making it valuable to your readers. For example, you can go more in-depth when explaining something like an infographic.

You Have Broken Images or Missing Alt Tags

Lastly, you should also consider checking your website search engine optimization practices for images. Sometimes, errors in your website search engine optimization could be hidden in things that aren’t text.

You might be wondering why images are connected to your website search engine optimization in the first place. Well. images can be considered an important part of content marketing in general.

However, images are also often the source of SEO issues.

If you have a broken image, that means you have a broken link to that image. This broken link makes the webpage unable to show the image that you’ve inserted.

On the other hand, you might also have a broken link because you didn’t include alt tags. Alt tags are important because Google can’t read images.

Google relies on alt tags to understand what your image is showing. This is also a factor that Google considers when ranking your page.

In addition, alt tags help the visually impaired to know that there is an image attached to the page while using screen readers.

With all of that said, it’s clear why Google often ranks pages with complete alt tags higher. This is because Google is concerned with providing a high-quality user experience.

So, before you leave an image for your website search engine optimization content, make sure to double-check your images. Making sure that your alt text is complete with keywords doesn’t take too much time.

Part of making sure that site visitors stay on your website also means making sure that your site loads fast enough. If it doesn’t, no one will stay because they’ll leave before your site even loads completely.

Next, you have to make sure that you have Meta Descriptions. Without these, you won’t have a hook to invite users to click your link.

You should also consider checking the length of your website search engine optimization content. Too short and it won’t rank well; too long and it might end up looking spammy.

And lastly, you should also check your website search engine optimization images. They should have complete links and alt tags in order for Google to recognize them.
