“Effectively Optimize Websites through On Site SEO” written by Mike Marko.

Do you know how to use on site SEO when optimizing your website?

On site SEO is a kind of SEO (search engine optimization) strategy that focuses on the elements of a website. Businesses commonly use on site SEO as a strategy to get high ranks in search engine result pages or SERPs. Like any SEO strategy, on site SEO also follows a strict formula in order to work properly.

However, on site SEO might sound like a complicated strategy for beginners. A lot of the terms used in it can make it sound even more intimidating.

When I first started with SEO, I was a little daunted by on site SEO too. But as time passed, I changed my mind about it. In fact, I even realized that on site SEO might actually be easier and more accessible than off site SEO.

I’ll show you why that’s the case in this blog post. Today I’ll give you the basic rundown on how to optimize a website with on site SEO.

How to Learn On Site SEO for Beginners

On site SEO isn’t actually as complicated as you might think. It’s just a strategy (or set of them) aimed at making your website the best it can be.

A lot of website owners nowadays perform at least a little bit of on site SEO themselves. They still tend to leave the more technical parts to experts, of course. But some aspects of on site SEO are easy enough to handle even for SEO beginners.

Those are the things this guide will take you through. But before I give you the steps for doing your own on site SEO, I’ll tell you a little more about search engine optimization first.

What Is Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization is a method used to help increase traffic to a website. It does that chiefly by increasing its search engine results page rank. That means it aims to put the website highest on the list of every search engine results page relevant to its topic.

Examples of search engines are Google, Bing, and Yahoo.  All of these have primary search results where web pages are shown and ranked.

These ranks are based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users. So if a user searches for “Wikipedia”, the topmost result will be Wikipedia’s main page/website. That’s because the search engine considers it the most relevant result for that search.

Relevance is important in SEO. If you’re doing SEO on a website selling women’s shoes, for instance, you probably don’t care if it ranks high in the results for a search on “acoustic guitars”. That’s because it wouldn’t be relevant.

On the other hand, if the search is for “best bargains for stiletto heels”, you’d probably want to optimize your website so it ranks high for that. That’s because it would be relevant to the searcher… who may even buy some shoes from your site afterwards.

Now there are many strategies used in SEO. On site SEO is only one category of them.

What Is on Site SEO?

On-Site SEO is the practice of optimizing elements on your website to improve your search engine ranking. This means optimizing both the content and HTML source code of your webpages.

The ultimate goal of on site SEO is to make it as easy as possible for both users and search engines to do these things:

    • Know what a web page is about.
    • Identify a particular keyword or set of keywords to use in queries.
    • Understand that the page is useful and worthy for any relevant search engine results page.

Now there are a lot of ways to do this. But probably the first thing you need to learn if you’re a beginner to on site SEO is how to use keywords.

What Are Keywords?

Keywords can help search engines as well as people figure out what your website is about. That makes them vital to the process of on site SEO.

Keywords are words or groups of words that define your content. Going back to the website selling women’s shoes, for example, possible keywords for its content would be “women’s shoes for sale” and “ladies’ shoes for sale”.

So how do you use keywords for on site SEO? A lot of ways, but mainly by putting them in your content. For example, put keywords in your page titles, blog posts, and so on.

But remember not to overuse keywords. If you just stick them everywhere for no reason, you’ll eventually irritate your website’s visitors — and in severe cases, can even drop in the SERPs.

Other Elements in Getting More Results

That doesn’t mean everything about your on site SEO is dependent on keywords. There are keyword-agnostic elements to on site SEO that need to be considered too.

Think of things like these, for example:

    • Content readability,
    • Links used on pages,
    • Page load speed,
    • Page URL structure,
    • Mobile friendliness, and
    • HTTPS status.

As you can see, these are on site SEO factors that don’t necessarily depend on keywords or keyword relevance. That’s why they’re called keyword-agnostic elements.

Need an example? Let’s take page load speed. The speed at which your pages load isn’t affected by the keywords you use for them. Yet it still has an impact on your SEO.

Factors to Consider for On Site SEO

To get the most positive outcome for your on site SEO strategy, it’s best to consider some factors that are beneficial for your on site SEO process. With that said, there are two major on site SEO factors to take.

The two major factors are:

  • Awesome content, and
  • Flawless user experience.

Making Your Content Awesome

If you’re having trouble making good content, it actually helps if you ask yourself why people visit your website. When you do this, you should also think about how you can keep visitors on your website.

Once you’ve reflected on these points, you should apply your realizations to your content production process. That way, you can produce content that you’ve come up with by thinking like your audience.

Doing this will most likely encourage users to visit your website.

Write content that will most likely be searched for by your target audience. These could be common topics related to your business or pain points that your target audience would want to find solutions for.

You should also make sure that the content that you publish will have the right keywords. Your content should also be informative and easy to read.

Have a Flawless User Experience

The second factor that you should consider is user experience. This means that users should easily understand how to use your website.

You can do this by making your website easy to navigate. Having clear text and straightforward navigation titles can easily do the trick.

You must also see to it that visitors can easily see a brief description of your website or your contact information.

Finally, you should always remember that it’s the user’s comfort that you need to consider first. A beautifully designed, user-friendly website can easily keep a visitor on your website longer.

Final Thoughts on the Easy Use of On Site SEO

In today’s blog post, I talked about using on site SEO as a strategy for your search engine optimization process. On site SEO is one of the most effective strategies to use when you want to rank higher on search engine result pages.

On site SEO is also called on-page SEO. It’s the process of optimizing parts of a page or website for SEO purposes. That can mean the content, the site’s structured data markup, the images, etc.

To make things simpler for beginners, however, I’ve narrowed down two basic goals to use as guides when starting out with on site SEO.

First is to generate and publish great content. Second is to give visitors to a website an excellent user experience.

Aiming to do these two things can help you a lot with your on site SEO plans. That should be enough to get you started, although you can also check out more of my SEO guides for beginners if you want to learn more.
