Why New Customers Can't Find You | Off-Page Search Engine Optimization Ranking - search engine optimization ranking

“Why New Customers Can’t Find You | Off-Page Search Engine Optimization Ranking” written by Mike Marko.

As someone learning to do SEO, it’s only natural to monitor your search engine optimization ranking. After all, keeping your search engine optimization ranking high is one of the core aims of SEO!

However, the mistake most people make here is in thinking that search engine optimization ranking is only affected by what’s called “on-page SEO”.

On-page or on-site SEO tells you to prioritize optimization of your website. That means producing great content, polishing your site architecture, and so on.

And in fact, all of those things do have a big influence on search engine optimization ranking.

However, you should also remember that on-page SEO is only one of the things that can boost your search engine optimization ranking. There’s also off-page SEO.

Now, you might be thinking, “Off-page SEO doesn’t actually involve optimizing parts of my website, so what makes it so important?” I can understand why you would think that way.

But you need to know that not paying attention to your off-page SEO can also negatively affect your search engine optimization ranking. Conversely, it can bring it up if done right.

So, I’ve made a guide to help you figure out what you might be doing wrong with your off-site SEO. I’ll also show you how to fix all of these common off-site SEO mistakes.

What’s Wrong with Your Off-Site SEO?

I would honestly consider off-site SEO the less-prioritized part of search engine optimization.

In my experience, I’ve noticed that very few online business owners even know about it, never mind its effects on search engine optimization ranking.

You need to start paying attention to off-site SEO if you want to improve your search engine optimization ranking. To do that, you need to understand what off-site SEO is.

Basically, off-site SEO refers to activities outside your website that still contribute to your search engine optimization ranking. These activities could refer to things like link building and social media marketing.

Now, off-site SEO might sound simple. However, positively affecting search engine optimization ranking through off-site SEO actually requires careful planning.

You might not even be aware that you’re negatively affecting your search engine optimization ranking. This is because even simple things like comments can greatly affect your off-site search engine optimization ranking.

In fact, let’s start there in our list of the things you might be doing wrong for your off-site SEO.

You’re Spamming Comments

I know how important it is to get the word out about your business online through any means necessary. This even includes commenting on things like blogs.

However, spamming comment sections on another blog is something you should avoid. This is because doing so will severely affect your search engine optimization ranking.

When you do this, your comment will most likely be removed or disapproved if it appears “spammy”.

Comments considered “spammy” could mean that the comment is insincere or is only there to provide a backlink to your website.

Webmasters also commonly remove comments that don’t contribute to the conversation or the blog. This means that the comment that you left won’t even get a chance to be seen.

That’s not good for your search engine optimization ranking.

You can even be banned from commenting altogether. This then lessens the places where you could promote your website.

Ultimately, leaving comments to serve as backlinks to your website doesn’t even do anything for your search engine optimization ranking. This is because these links are considered “no follow” links.

Therefore, search engines ignore these kinds of comments.

Additionally, be wary if you’re hiring an SEO firm that promises you a number of links each month. If they promise you this, you should make sure that they don’t count spammy comments with “no follow” links.

Poor Anchor Text Choices

Another important part of off-site SEO that you need for your search engine optimization ranking is anchor text, particularly for content you publish off your site.

To explain, Google sees anchor text as votes for specific keywords that point back to your website. These votes then contribute to your search engine optimization ranking.

This is why it’s ideal to choose the right anchor text for content that you publish online. Choosing the right anchor text is just as important as having it in the first place.

You should remember that using the wrong keywords will put votes on the wrong words for your search engine optimization ranking. This means that your search engine optimization ranking will be a mess.

In some cases, anchor text even has the wrong link attached. So you should always double check both the anchor text and its link.

Most of the time, business owners or SEO firms simply attach a home page URL to an anchor link. Doing this makes the anchor text in search engine optimization ranking useless.

Ideally, you should use anchor text with the right keyword of the topic that you want to own. Then, you should attach a link related to that keyword or topic.

You should also avoid spamming the same keyword as anchor text in the same content. This lack of variety will make Google think your anchor text is spammy enough to ignore.

You’re Buying Links

Next, if you’re a business owner who is ready to shell out money for your search engine optimization ranking, you might have bought links before.

“Buying links” refers to paying companies to put backlinks to your website on various external pages and content.

Ultimately, buying links that direct to your website is a shady tactic that often doesn’t work. This is because Google has become increasingly efficient at finding bought links.

Once found, these links will no longer bring up your search engine optimization ranking. This means the money you spent to buy these links will be wasted.

Search engines are also strict on the amount of authority and relevance of websites with backlinks to your own site. If the site is deemed shady by search engines, or poorly made, its content and the links you bought will be ignored.

Usually, you won’t know where your backlinks will be placed once you buy them. This factor should already be a red flag for you.

Without your knowledge, your backlinks could end up on poor-quality sites. These websites will then be ignored by Google because they lack the authority to be seen as genuine websites.

You’re Wasting Time on Article Marketing

Another common search engine optimization ranking practice that online businesses turn to is article marketing. Originally, article marketing was a way to get quality backlinks to your website.

Basically, you add an article with a backlink to your website on high-traffic sites. Unfortunately, Google has begun ignoring sites that prove to be “low-quality”.

In some cases, article marketing also doesn’t help search engine optimization ranking because business owners post the same article on multiple sites.

This then renders the SEO useless to search engine optimization ranking because it will be deemed duplicate content.

Doing this also flags the content as spam link building. So, ideally, you should focus on unique and rich content to raise your search engine optimization ranking.

You should also focus more on creating content on your own website. Doing so eliminates the threat of Google ignoring your content because it’s on a legitimate website.

Abundance of Low-Quality Content

Lastly, a very common search engine optimization ranking mistake is focusing only on quantity. When it comes to any part of online marketing, online business owners should always prioritize quality.

This means that you shouldn’t put too much value on hundreds of links to your website on low-quality sites. Instead, you should prefer even a few links on websites that have authority, legitimacy, and relevance.

This is because a website like this will rank higher on search engine optimization ranking. Google will see the authority and relevance of high-quality sites and will then recommend it higher.

You should also avoid focusing on the quantity of content you can produce on off-site blogs.

Yes, you can produce a lot of SEO content on an off-site blog. However, that means you’ll have to manage two sites.

So, you should focus on putting out good SEO content for guest-posting on other blogs. This is because high-quality content is more likely to be approved for guest-posting, compared to a ton of mediocre content.

Final Thoughts on Off-Site Search Engine Optimization Ranking

Maintaining your off-site search engine optimization ranking can be meticulous and even overbearing at times.

However, you should always remember that off-site SEO is essential to your search engine optimization ranking.

So, you should be very careful when doing off-site SEO activities. And doing so doesn’t even have to be as meticulous as you may think!

Firstly, you should be mindful of how you leave comments with backlinks to your website. These comments need to stay in the comment section if you want them to work!

Your anchor text selections should also be monitored well in order to work. Poor keyword choices and even poor links will do nothing for your search engine optimization ranking.

Next, if you’re buying links to other websites, you should be mindful of where these links are placed. Shady websites will only be ignored by search engines and will do nothing for your search engine optimization ranking.

Your article marketing will also be ignored if you put out multiple duplicate content. So, you should pour all your article making effort into your own website.

And lastly, your content quality should always be prioritized over quantity. You should always remember that your content will most likely get approved for guest-posting if it’s high-quality.
