What Does No Mud No Lotus Mean?

“What Does No Mud No Lotus Mean?” written by Guest Contributor.

Have you heard the phrase “no mud, no lotus“?

No Mud No Lotus

You can’t have the beauty of the lotus flower without the mud that helps it grow and without suffering, there is no way to learn how to be understanding and compassionate.

No Mud No Lotus is the title of a great audio by meditation teacher Tara Brach. Watch through to the end for an amazing guided meditation. (32:30)

Suffered?

If you’ve ever suffered

  • A major loss
  • A conflict in a relationship
  • Or someone you love getting hurt

These are the muddy times that can be used as an opportunity to dig deeper into our spirit and discover our strengths and depths of compassion.

The stuff that happens in life can be seen as an opportunity for deeper enlightenment if we bring a certain presence to it.

If we root deep into the mud of presence.

However many times our first reaction is to get caught in reactivity. Fear and anger can take over and we can blame others.. like this story by

Steward Blackburn

STEWART BLACKBURN tells the story of a 32-year-old man who lost his brother when he was 8 years old which caused a lot of anger. He got stuck in the mud with his anger until he was able to tell a different story and find forgiveness.

Victor Frankl Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, in his famous book, “Man’s Search for Meaning,” tells the story of how he survived the Holocaust by finding personal meaning in the experience, which gave him the will to live. He was able to stay with what was difficult and find meaning in it.

If you are struggling with a difficult situation

Some Tips From Tara Brach

Here are a few tips from Tara Brach’s audio.

Can you trust the awakening? Not cover it up with behaviors that make us numb

  • Overeating
  • Drinking
  • Drugs
  • Work too much

Can you encounter what’s difficult and stay with it, but not get stuck in the mud? Can you move through it?

Be Vulnerable

Without vulnerability, we limit the fullness of those important experiences that are wrought with uncertainty: Love, belonging, trust, joy, and creativity to name a few.

Ask yourself How have I been relating to this?

Have I been judging it as wrong or It shouldn’t be like this?

It’s ok to be vulnerable.

Can you bring a radical acceptance of what is; knowing it’s the mud that nourishes your freedom if you pay attention?

Try saying out loud “May this difficulty serve to awaken compassion and wisdom.”

Imagine how this might serve to awaken.

Try saying out loud “May this difficulty help to wake up this heart.

Keep contact with the mud and look towards the light

Feel the fear the shame the hurt and at the same time wish you or another well.

Don’t get stuck by allowing the space.

Allow. Can you feel the expansiveness of this timeless presence that is our shared space? To stay with it create space around it and name it. When you show your vulnerability and compassion it gives others permission to do the same.

Parting Thoughts

Here is the beautiful Sanskrit mantra that literally means jewel of the lotus flower that Tara Brach shares in her video (32:30)

Om mani padme hum
the jewel of the lotus flower

If you find yourself struggling with a particularly difficult situation and want to find a way to create a space around the feelings of anger or hurt. Try focusing on taking a few deep breaths and use this mantra to help create a space of vulnerability and compassion for yourself and others.
