Do you want to learn SEO basics and use them on your business?

Business-wise, that’s a good idea. SEO or search engine optimization will increase the visibility of your website on the Internet. That could open up a lot of possibilities for your business.

However, SEO isn’t a one-time process. It’s not something that you can master overnight either.

Still, that shouldn’t stop you from learning what you can about it. The sooner you do, the sooner you can start applying your knowledge — and the sooner your business can benefit.

But you need to start with the fundamentals, obviously. I can help you with that. Today, I’ll help you learn SEO basics every beginner should know.

Learn SEO Basics for Your Business

The first thing I tell people asking to learn SEO basics is this: SEO is changing all the time.

You can’t just stick to one SEO process because your strategy should reflect the updates or changes in search engines’ algorithms. These updates happen very often too.

So if you want to learn SEO basics, you should learn to deal with constant change.

That may make it sound like there’s no point to trying to learn SEO basics. After all, where’s the guarantee that these fundamentals won’t change, themselves? Why take the trouble to learn SEO basics if they may become outdated shortly?

The truth is, there’s no guarantee. Yes, even the first principles of SEO can change in the future.

But that doesn’t mean they will — or even that they’re likely to.

Some things about SEO are so firmly established that it would take a major upheaval to shake them. That’s why you can rest easy that some of SEO’s foundations will stay foundational for a while.

For example, when you learn SEO basics, one of the first things you learn is that most SEO focuses on Google. That’s because it has an unmatched market share of online search. It’s had it for a long time.

These are the sorts of things I’ll cover here so you can learn SEO basics. In fact, we can start right there — with understanding how basic SEO for Google’s search engine works.

Basic SEO for Google

As I already said, most SEO is done for Google since most online users search with it. So if you have to learn SEO basics for any search engine, start with this one.

Now the goal of all SEO is to put a website or webpage at the top of the search engine result pages (SERPs). There are a lot of things you can do to achieve that on Google. Some are simple while others are complex.

But the very first step you need to take is also the easiest. For your website to be ranked quickly, you just have to submit it.

Google can actually find and index your site by itself. It crawls websites and indexes their contents, which later factors into how it ranks them on SERPs.

But if you wait for Google to do it, you could lose valuable time and traffic. It’s better to go ahead and submit the site to Google yourself.

If you don’t know how to do it, there are dozens of guides on the Internet that can help. You can technically ask someone else to do it for you, but it’s better to do it yourself if you want to learn SEO basics.

The easiest way to index your website is by manually submitting a sitemap to Google Search Console. Just choose “submit a sitemap” on this page.

Once you’re done submitting your site, don’t expect it to appear in the SERPs immediately. It can take anywhere from a couple days to a month. Just be patient and improve or optimize your site in the meantime.

When your website does finally appear on the SERPs, the next thing you’re going to do is make it rank higher. To do this, you need to use different SEO methods.

Using On-Site SEO

On-site SEO is a given if you want to learn SEO basics. It refers to optimizations made on the website itself.

Some of these optimizations are easily visible. Others aren’t… but since they’re still on the website, they’re counted as on-site SEO too.

To further help you learn SEO basics, I’ll show you some aspects of your website that you can change when doing on-site SEO.

1) Page Titles

Page titles are usually seen at the top of an Internet browser or in the window tab of an open web page.

The page title should be congruent with your webpage’s contents. You also need a keyword in the title to make it easier for search engines and your audience to find your page.

Keywords are terms that define the content of a page. When you learn SEO basics, keywords are specifically the search terms for which you want your page to appear in the SERPs.

So for example, if you have a webpage with a blog post on doves’ nesting habits, you may have keywords like “doves”, “nesting doves”, and so on. Once you learn SEO basics, you’ll learn to pay close attention to keywords.

2) Meta Descriptions

The meta description is another thing you should know about if you want to learn SEO basics for on-site optimization.

A meta description is an attribute within your meta tags that describes your page. It usually appears as descriptive text in the SERPs, under your headline.

The meta description must give an accurate description of your page’s content. If it does, people will know what to expect from it. It also helps search engines figure out how relevant your content is to a search.

That’s why search engine algorithms like meta descriptions and other metadata. So if you want to learn SEO basics, learn all you can about metadata.

3) Quality Content

Your website’s content is also part of on-site SEO. In fact, you can’t learn SEO basics without learning the import of content.

Currently, Google’s algorithm prioritizes web pages with high-quality content. Using auto-generated or copied content may make your website rank lower in the SERPs

Also, search engines will give your website a low ranking if you overuse keywords in your content. A few years ago, keyword stuffing was one of the most effective ways to reach the top spot on Google search results. But now, it’s more likely to send you to the bottom.

That’s because Google figured out that people were doing keyword stuffing to “game” the search algorithm. It resulted in poor-quality content being returned at the top of the SERPs.

That meant people looking for things online with Google weren’t getting what they wanted.

So now, if you want to learn SEO basics, you should learn to focus on quality. Search engines like Google are doing the same, so you should follow their lead.

4) Technical On-Site SEO

On-site SEO doesn’t just deal with the basic aspects of your website. This process also involves some of the more complex or technical elements of a webpage.

What elements are these? Here are just a few examples:

  • The site’s XML sitemap,
  • The site’s HTTPS status codes,
  • The site’s mobile-friendliness or mobile version,
  • Internal and external links,
  • Average page load speed, and
  • Content management systems.

If you’re not the person who developed your site, you’ll probably have to leave most of this up to a professional.

Learning Off-Site SEO

You also need to understand off-site SEO if you want to learn SEO basics. Off-site SEO refers to actions taken outside of your own website to improve your SERP ranking.

Usually, off-site SEO deals with promotion methods such as building backlinks. These are links on other websites leading back to your website.

Backlinks are actually vital if you want to learn SEO basics. It’s because a healthy backlink profile can help you go higher in the SERPs.

So now you probably want to know what a healthy backlink profile is since you’re trying to learn SEO basics already.

Basically, it’s having links to a website/webpage that come not only from numerous sites but also high-quality ones.

Since you’re already learning about backlinks while trying to learn SEO basics, let me tell you too that different types of backlink. Here they are:

  • Organic backlink,
  • Brand mentions,
  • Deep backlinks, and
  • Placed backlinks.

Each type of backlink carries different weight in Google’s algorithms. That’s why it’s advisable to use each type strategically.

Anyway, building backlinks is often deemed the central activity in off-site SEO. But there are other off-site SEO activities you’ll discover as you continue to learn SEO basics:

  • Guest posting,
  • Social media marketing,
  • Social bookmarking, and
  • Forum marketing, among others.

Taking time to learn SEO basics can be a good idea for anyone with a website. It can help you figure out where to start with your online marketing strategy for your brand.

It’s important to note that when you learn SEO basics, most (but not all of it) will be aimed at ranking on Google. That’s because Google has the biggest share of the online search market.

That’s also why trying to learn SEO basics for on-site optimization involves learning things like submitting to Google. It also means using keywords in elements like page titles and using only quality content.

As for off-site optimization, it’s usually focused on backlinks. Good backlink profiles can do a lot to improve your website’s rank in the SERPs.

Even after you learn SEO basics, though, there’s still a long way to go before you finally reach the top of the SERPs. SEO takes serious time and effort.
