“How to Use Twitter to Promote Business” written by Mike Marko.

You’re probably here to learn how to use Twitter to promote business. That’s great news!

If my previous posts about the platform have made anything clear, it’s that Twitter is good for business.

You can use it to connect with your customers, find new ones, and deliver customer service.

You can even use it to advertise, build partnerships, and more.

If you’re interested in any of those things, this post is for you.

That’s because today, we’re going to talk about how to use Twitter to promote business effectively.

Tips for How to Use Twitter to Promote Business

Now while I do think Twitter is a great platform for marketing, it’s not all roses.

There are a few thorns to look out for as well when you’re learning how to use Twitter to promote business.

For example, let’s talk about the fact that tweets have the shortest lifespan of all social media posts. On average, a tweet’s lifespan is a measly 18 minutes.

In other words, a tweet actually has a shorter lifespan than an adult mayfly (24 hours, in case you’re wondering)!

So how does this affect how to use Twitter to promote business?

It makes getting attention more difficult. If your tweet lasts for only an average of 18 minutes on most users’ feeds, it’s much harder to stand out.

It also makes it much harder for your message to stick around.

Add that to other hurdles like the sheer number of tweets (around 6,000 tweets per second), and you have a serious challenge on your hands.

But that’s all right. As I said, I’ll show you how to use Twitter to promote business effectively today.

With these tips, you’ll see how to work within the platform’s limitations and take advantage of its features.

Get Your Twitter Profile in Order

This is obviously the first step in how to use Twitter to promote business.

Your Twitter page is your nerve center. It’s what people check to learn more about you, it’s where all of your posts are gathered, it’s what you use to tweet or interact with others.

For it to be an effective tool in how to use Twitter to promote business, you need to make sure it’s at its best.

I’ve already written about this in previous posts on how to set up a Twitter business page.

But to help you out, here are a few tips for that again.

1) Pick a Memorable Handle

Your Twitter handle matters a lot. It’s the first textual representation people have of your account.

So, it obviously needs to show them who you are if you it to help you in how to use Twitter to promote business.

In general, businesses are advised to simply use their name.

If that’s not possible (e.g. if someone already has that Twitter handle), just add a minor variation to it. Try these options:

  • Add a keyword to your handle, e.g. @mikemarkoSEO.
  • Add a location if your business has a geographic element.
  • Add “HQ” or “Inc” to your business name, whichever’s applicable.
  • Add “real” or “official” to your business name (hey, it worked for @DavidBowieReal).

2) Use Representative Images

A good bit of your Twitter profile is made up of images. There’s your header image and your profile pic — both of which take up a lot of space on the page.

As such, it pays to make sure those truly represent you. Branding is vital in how to use Twitter to promote business.

For your profile pic, make sure to use your logo. If it’s a complex logo, though, you may want to use a simplified version of it.

That’s because a lot of people will be seeing it on mobile devices. That means smaller screens.

As for the header, try to include some element of your logo in it. You should feel free to be creative, but still link it to the visual parts of your brand.

That’s important in how to use Twitter to promote business.

3) Optimize Your Bio

You can’t skip this step when learning how to use Twitter to promote business.

To optimize your bio, just ask yourself these questions:

  • What does your business do?
  • How would you define your business in just 2-5 words?
  • What has your business achieved?
  • What hashtags or associated brands need to be included in the bio?

The answers to these can help you flesh out your description.

Research Your Niche or Keywords on Twitter

This is one of the most important steps in how to use Twitter to promote business.

You see, you need to know what you’re up against and what waters you’re swimming in. That way, you’ll have a better idea of how to keep your brand afloat on the platform.

The simple way of doing it is to search for the hashtags used in your niche, as well as your own brand name.

See what’s being said, what the trending topics are, and which are the most influential accounts.

Take notes, because this can help you with the other steps in how to use Twitter to promote business.

You can also run an advanced search to look for more specific things, like prospective customers.

Try looking for tweets about your niche from users in the area you serve, for example.

Develop a Content Strategy

All right, so this is where the research you did in the previous step begins to pay off.

All that research can guide you in this next step of how to use Twitter to promote business.

Developing your Twitter content strategy means a number of things, including these:

  • Figuring out when to post.
  • Figuring out what to post.
  • Figuring out why to post.

The When should be determined by the time your target audience tends to be most active. Do some research — bolstered by Twitter Analytics — to find that out.

The What depends on your audience’s interests, the trending topics in your niche, and your own business.

Finally, the Why depends on your own Twitter marketing objectives. Always ask yourself what a particular post or series of them is supposed to achieve for you — brand exposure, conversion boosts, or something else?

To help you better figure out how to use Twitter to promote business using content, here are some more tips.

1) Incorporate Multimedia

If you want to learn how to use Twitter to promote business, you have to learn to use different media when marketing.

That’s because audiences generally appreciate multimedia content more.

Consider the fact that tweets with images get 150% more retweets.

So try to have an image for every one of your tweets. Don’t forget to include video when possible too.

2) Plan Your Hashtag Usage

Again, your previous keyword and niche research will help here. You should have discovered which hashtags can help you in how to use Twitter to promote business.

Plan which hashtags to use for which part of your content strategy, though. Certain hashtags may be better for posts with a particular aim.

For instance, some hashtags come with a verb. These may be especially useful for content where you have a call to action.

Some of the best examples aren’t even from business but for social advocacy. Look at 2015’s #PrayforParis and 2018’s #MarchforOurLives.

Work With Twitter Influencers

Influencers can help a lot in how to use Twitter to promote business.

That’s because their reach can help you promote your business to even more people than before.

Just be sure to find an influencer who not only embodies your brand’s vision but who also has engaged followers.

These influencers are the best ones to employ in how to use Twitter to promote business.

That’s because their followers are actually likely to take action when called to it.

Work Out an Advertising Plan

You can technically learn how to use Twitter to promote business without using advertising.

However, you won’t be getting the most you can out of this platform.

Ads can help you push your brand’s or content’s visibility to the next level on Twitter.

As such, I’d say having an advertising plan is part of how to use Twitter to promote business like a professional.

Now, your advertising plan and strategy depend on various factors. Those include your goals, your audience, your niche, and so on.

But if you need some quick tips for Twitter advertising in general, here you go:

  • A/B test your ad copy. Once you figure out which one gets better results, then you can invest more of your budget into a campaign using that copy.
  • Give your ad urgency. If it involves a special offer, for example, make sure the expiration date of the offer is prominent.
  • Optimize both your ad copy and landing page for mobile. A lot of Twitter users use mobile, so it only makes sense to do this in how to use Twitter to promote a business.
