While more brands are now starting to use Instagram for marketing, many of them still don’t quite know how to use Instagram to boost sales.

It’s a bit of a surprise because this is actually one of the best platforms for lead generation.

For one thing, it’s the platform with the highest user engagement numbers.

60% of its users also discover new products on the platform. 50% follow brands (a higher brand-following rate than any other social network).

Combine that with the knowledge that it has over half a billion active monthly users.

This is clearly a platform with strong potential for lead generation.

The problem is learning how to use Instagram to realize that potential.

Fortunately for you, I’m here to help you out there. In this post, I’m going to show you how to use Instagram to get more leads and ultimately, sales.

Learning how to use Instagram to get leads used to be trickier.

That’s because the platform used to disallow links in posts. The only places where you could put a link were your profile and Instagram Stories.

Things have changed with the introduction of Instagram Shoppable posts.

This feature allows businesses to tag products in their posts. As long as a product is in their Facebook catalog, it can be tagged.

Users can click on the product tag and be taken straight to your online shop.

So using Instagram Shopping is obviously one of the things to do when learning how to use Instagram to boost sales.

But there are other things you can do besides that to drive more leads down your sales funnel.

Here are my other tips for how to use Instagram for lead generation.

 

1) Don’t Do the Hard Sell

Even if Instagram now has a shopping feature, that doesn’t mean you can get too “salesy” on it. That’s one of the first thing to learn when learning how to use Instagram nowadays.

Why? Because hard-selling just doesn’t work very well for today’s audiences.

This is especially true if you’re marketing to millennials. They even prefer user-generated content or UGC in brand marketing.

That tells you they’re not likely to respond well to a traditional hard-sell approach.

Even for your Shoppable posts, try to show off your products instead of “pushing” your audience to buy them.

You have to keep in mind, even when learning how to use Instagram for business, that you’re still on a social network.

It isn’t a place people come to just to be hit by your brand’s version of a used car salesman.

So don’t annoy potential customers by getting too aggressive with your sales pitches. Learn how to use Instagram in a way that doesn’t annoy your audience.

Otherwise, you’ll end up losing more prospects than you gain from your promotions.

2) Consider Instagram Ads

This probably seems a little strange coming after me advising you not to do hard sells when figuring out how to use Instagram to get leads.

But you can actually do ads without being too salesy. In fact, the most effective ads on Instagram are usually the ones that don’t hard-sell either.

Instagram ads can be very useful for enhancing your lead generation on the platform. That’s why part of learning how to use Instagram to boost sales necessarily includes their use.

They give you strong options for targeting your ideal customers, after all. That gives you much better chances of higher returns for less effort.

If you have your buyer persona worked out, ads therefore represent a great opportunity for collecting leads with a high chance of conversion.

 

3) Do Retargeting

Want to learn how to use Instagram to boost sales? Then learn how to do retargeting!

Retargeting is simply the process of re-marketing or advertising again to those who’ve already visited your website.

So it’s serving up your ad content again to people who’ve already shown an interest in what you have to offer.

Retargeting tends to be effective because it ties into the way most consumers respond to advertising.

Many of them need to see an ad repeatedly before it actually drives them to make a purchase.

So do retargeting for your ad campaigns to learn how to use Instagram for lead generation.

4) Announce Promos and Discounts

Knowing how to use Instagram to boost sales means knowing how to prod consumers into action.

There are few better tools for doing that than promos.

Think about offering promotional offerings like one-day sales, special discounts, coupons, and the like to your audience. Use Instagram to announce the promos.

If your promo also has a geographic element (say, it’s a promo happening in a particular store), you can even geotag the post.

That can help you get the interest of users most likely to act on the promo’s invitation.

5) Run Competitions

Competitions or contests can actually help you boost sales.

That sounds odd since it seems more like a situation where you’re giving something away (as a prize, yes, but still).

Even so, the contest can generate interest in the product being offered as a prize.

Even if people don’t win, they’re more likely to consider purchasing the item afterwards because their appetite for it has already been whetted.

You can use contests to draw attention to more than one product, of course. You just need to learn how to use Instagram to display products to advantage.

That means releasing content related to the contest that shows off the items you want to promote.

That lets them piggyback off the interest the contest is getting from your audience.

It’s a good way to advertise products without being too blatant about advertising them.

6) Partner with Influencers

If you want to learn how to use Instagram to get more leads, you should learn how to work with influencers.

These are Instagram users whose accounts have a significant number of followers.

If they’re influencers in your niche, that means many of their followers happen to be members too of your target audience.

Many of the other tips I already gave on how to use Instagram to boost sales can be combined with influencer partnerships.

For example, you can partner with an influencer to release a special discount code.

That influencer’s followers may be invited to use the code to buy a product you and the influencer are promoting.

Here’s an extra tip for learning how to use Instagram to promote with the help of influencers, by the way. Seek out influencers whose followers exhibit high engagement rates.

That means they’re likelier to engage your promo with the influencer too.

7) Use Videos

Something I’ve noticed about brands selling products on Instagram is that photos still dominate.

But more businesses should be taking advantage of videos to show off their wares.

Part of learning how to use Instagram is learning how to exploit its features to the fullest. The ability to post videos is one feature you shouldn’t ignore.

Most marketers will already tell you that video is the future. Many even say it’s the format that gets the most leads.

So produce great video content that exhibits your products because the returns from it can be impressive.

You can release it as a regular video post, as an Instagram Story, or even as a video ad.
