Why Use Google Optimise for Your Business

Google Optimise launched in beta last 2016 and was updated last year leaving internet marketers curious about its improvements. Its optimization features can help you discover what strategies are most effective for your business.

As it’s designed to help businesses meet goals easily, even its basic features can significantly help improve traffic and overall profit for your business.

Google Optimise Basic Features

Google Optimise works best hand-in-hand with Google Analytics. While Google Analytics identifies your key audience, Google Optimise is used to target them.

Google Optimise has a free and paid version. Although the paid version has more features, the free version still offers several useful features including:

  • Split testing without a developer.
  • Automatic integration with Google Analytics.
  • Implement using Google Tag Manager.
  • Advanced targeting capabilities.
  • Built-in visual editor.

Setting Up Google Optimise

For beginners, the first step will be to go to the Google Optimise website and create your account by clicking the “Sign Up for Free” button. Afterwards, step-by-step instructions on how to proceed are provided.

To learn these steps in more detail, continue reading below.

Create Your Own Account

To create your account, you need to choose an account name that best highlights your business. You will then be asked to choose an objective from the following options:

  • Improve Google products,
  • Benchmarking, and
  • Get in-depth analysis

Afterwards, create a container name related to your account by looking through your Experiments View. This essentially sets the configuration information of your created experiment.

In this section, you can see your onboarding checklists and other setting options.

If you don’t see your onboarding checklist right away, click the gray information icon in the right-hand corner of the screen.

Link to Google Analytics

On the onboarding checklist, Google encourages you to immediately start an experiment, though it is wise to link your account to Google Analytics first. Do this by expanding the third checklist and clicking “Link to Google Analytics”.

Click the blue “Link Property” button to be directed to select a Google Analytics property. Follow all the steps displayed to link your account to Google Analytics.

Install Google Optimise Snippet

The last step is to install the Google Optimise snippet. All you need to do is click step 4 on your onboarding checklist to see the download notification.

You can install the snippet with or without the use of Google Tag Manager. It’s necessary to install Google Optimise snippet before you start any experiment.

Setting Up an Experiment

Now that the initial steps are complete, you can start setting up your own experiment.

Click the blue “Create Experiment” button to get started. Choose your experiment name by using your domain, company name, or anything else related to your business.

You will then need to select the type of experiment you will use from the following:

  • A/B test type,
  • Redirect test, and
  • Multivariate test.

A/B Tests Type

The easiest and most common type of experiment, the A/B Test Type (split testing) compares two variants of the same page and determines which one performs better. In simpler terms, it compares test A to test B with concrete proof of why one is superior.

Using this type of experiment test helps test the following aspects of your website:

  • Headline,
  • Sub Headline,
  • Paragraph Text,
  • Call to Action Text,
  • Links,
  • Images, and
  • Media Mentions.

Redirect Tests

This is a type of A/B Test that allows you to test two different pages against each other. This type of test is recommended when you want to test two very different pages or completely redesign pages.

Multivariate Tests

This test allows you to test your experiment with multiple variables. As a result, you can then see which performs best among all possible combinations immediately.
