Considering you’ve come looking for this blog post, you’re probably already aware of the importance of SEO in marketing.

But a lot of other people are the same. So, you’re not the only one planning to use SEO on your website. In fact, your competitors are very likely doing it too.

That being said, simply learning how to SEO your website won’t do. You have to take it to the next level.

But that’s the problem. If you’re only starting to learn about SEO, you’re probably years away from doing SEO like an expert.

So that’s why instead of spending years on trial and error yourself, I’ll save you from the trouble and show you how to SEO your website like an expert in this blog post. That way, you can work on getting your website to the first page of search results right away.

SEO is the best way to ensure that people interested in what you offer can find you online. That’s probably the main reason why you want to learn how to SEO your website.

Search engines are widely used by consumers to look for information and reviews regarding local businesses. This ultimately leads them to buy their products and services — but again, that’s only if they can find those services in the first place.

That alone is enough reason to learn how to SEO your website. But before you learn SEO, why do think learning about SEO takes some time.

For marketers, it’s common knowledge that learning how to SEO your website can be challenging. Why? It has to do with what SEO is and how SEO and search engines work.

To begin with, search engines crawl websites and check various information. Ultimately, their goal is to determine where a website ranks for particular searches.

Search engine optimization or SEO is a technique used by online marketers to build their website in a way that fits the criteria of search engines’ ranking. This is probably the reason why you want to learn how to SEO your website.

Some search engines are Google, Bing, Yahoo,,, and Baidu. While all of them can be used to search the Internet, they don’t all use the same engine for it. As with most other machines, a difference of engine can mean a difference of results.

As such, searching for the same terms in different search engines will give you different results. But most SEO focuses on Google because it has the largest share of the Internet’s search market.

That is, let’s talk about algorithms.

2) Algorithms Are Complicated

Algorithms are complicated and diverse formulas that dictate where your website or webpage will rank in the results for a search.

Let’s say you have a website on chickens. You obviously want people searching for “chickens” to find you on the Web.

If someone searches for “chickens” on Google, your website will likely be one of the search results Google produces. But take note of that: it’s just going to be one of them.

That’s because there are thousands upon thousands of other websites about chickens. For people to be likely to visit your website, you want it to be in the first page of the search results.

But what decides if it gets to be there or in some other search result page further down?

The search engine’s algorithm, of course.

Search engine algorithms consider many factors when ranking search results. They consider content quality, content relevance, page meta data, page load speed, and more. And that’s where the challenge comes.

You see, algorithms are very complicated. They take into account so many factors in ranking websites that it’s almost impossible to consider all of those factors yourself.

3) Search Engines Regularly Update Their Algorithms

Another challenge with SEO is that these algorithms are regularly updated. By the time you figure out the algorithm Google was using last month, it’s probably been updated again at least once.

That’s why keeping up with search engine algorithms can be a chore. Sometimes, the changes made to them are so drastic they’ll even cause SEO experts frustration.

Even so, you can’t ignore algorithms because, in the end, they determine if your website is relevant to the search queries of users. So let’s start to learn how to SEO your website.

Search Engines Love High-Quality Content

The more quality content you have, the more likely it is that your visitors will stick around. The more visitors you get, the better the ranking your website usually gets on search engines.

That’s not necessarily a direct result, by the way. It can be due to the things that tend to come with higher website traffic instead.

For instance, if you have more site visitors, you have more chances to get referrals. You also get more chances to get high-quality backlinks. Both of those things are good for SEO.

If you want to learn how to SEO your website, keep that in mind.

So content is important when you want to know how to SEO your website. But any old content isn’t enough —  it should be “high-quality”. Here are some steps for producing high-quality content:

1) Use Social Media for Content Ideas

Since we’re talking about creating high-quality content, the topic should also be high-quality.

It’s worth noting that a lot of your target audience have problems they want to solve. And nowadays, these people tend to express their troubles and feelings in social media networks through status updates, tweets, etc.

If that’s the case, you can create content that solves the problems or at least gives them an in-depth answer to the questions they post on social media.

This is just one way to come up with content ideas when learning how to SEO your website.

2) Take Advantage of Customer Feedback

If you already have customers, coming up with content ideas will be easier. For starters, instead of relying on random people, you can get insights from your target audience.

Be it positive or negative, comments about your offers are helpful, especially when coming from customers.

With feedback, you can get a better understanding of your customers. Their problems, their goals, the selling point of your offers, and areas where it can improve.

If you don’t have a lot of customers, you can also check the products of your competitors. Then, browse the reviews of their customers.

Learning how to SEO your website actually involves a lot of competitor research. Before that, don’t forget that this “competitors” that we’re talking about are those websites in the first page of search engines. They’re the only ones worth considering as competition.

With that said, these websites are likely to be authority websites with a large following. They’re also likely to have the same target audience you do.

That means you should figure out how they got such a large following. You can do this by observing their type of content.

If you can find out what type resonates with the readers, you can have a better idea of what content satisfies your audience.

Now, with a topic and type of content ready, it’s time to proceed to the next step of how to SEO your website.

4) Checking for Relevant Keywords

Keywords, in terms of SEO, are words or even phrases that searchers input on search engines. They can also be called “search queries”.

With that in mind, you should already know the importance of using popular keywords in order to come up with content topics. You can use keyword research tools to look for content ideas when learning how to SEO your website.

5) Come up with a Unique Headline

A headline is one factor of your content that should never be done half-heartedly. Headlines play a major role in driving people to read your content.

The headline of your content is also likely to be the title that shows up in search engine results pages (SERPs). These are the results you get after entering a search query in a search engine.

On that account, your headline should be enticing. A title that gets people to stop doing whatever they’re doing and read your content. That’s how enticing it should be.

Also, remember to include your primary keyword in the headline. Your primary keyword is the keyword that should appear most frequently throughout the content.

Get a Better Understanding of SERPs

When creating content for your website, it’s important to consider how it would look in SERPs so you can optimize it properly.

At the moment, the following are the SERP elements you need to pay attention to for SEO purposes. They’re also the elements you can optimize most easily.

1) Meta Title

Meta Titles are the titles with the largest font, at the top of a search result. Since algorithms depend on meta titles for ranking, you should consider formatting yours in the way that search engines prefer.

Take note, however, that meta titles aren’t exactly the headline of the blog post to which a search result leads.

Put simply, if the headline of a blog post is “How to SEO Your Website Like an Expert”, the actual meta title could be slightly different, like “How to SEO Your Website | Mike Marko”.

With that said, make sure to keep the meta title 55 characters or below. This is the preferred title length for Google’s SERPs.

You should also consider inserting your brand name along with the blog title (as in my example). Doing so can help increase your click-through-rate (CTR) and brand awareness.

Remember to have your keyword or a variation of your keyword in the meta title as well. As I mentioned earlier, having keywords in titles is vital when learning how to SEO your website.

2) URL

URLs are found in between the meta title and description (which we’ll talk about after this). They’re also colored green on Google at the moment.

URLs are easy to optimize. Just make sure yours is easily readable and concise. Since URLs affect the ranking of your blog post, remember to include keywords in them too.

3) Meta Description

Unlike meta titles and URLs, the description won’t affect your ranking on search engines directly. However, it can still play a major role in increasing your CTR or click-through rate. That’s why descriptions should be tempting.

Also, use your primary keyword throughout the description, specifically at the beginning. And in the end, insert a call-to-action. This is usually an invitation for them to learn more about your content.

Finally, to make sure every part of your description can be read, keep it at 200 characters. It won’t fit in the search result if it goes beyond that limit. Instead, ellipses will be used at the end (…).

Never Stop Monitoring Your Website

While posting and optimizing content is important, you should keep monitoring your website. This is one of the basics of learning how to SEO your website.

If you don’t, it can cause downtime issues such as an interruption in content posting, stagnant visitors, and more.

To give you a better idea of how important monitoring your website is, here are some of the factors that you should consider:

Consider Your Visitors

Whenever a user dislikes your website, there’s a huge chance that they won’t click on any of your content again in the search engines.

In the case of visitors, if they see that your website is stagnant, they may assume that it’s already down.

This results in them not visiting your site again, although there’s a chance they might come back. After all, users can find different sites just like yours (but better!) in no time.

Consider the Search Engines

While search engines don’t exactly detect idle websites and penalize their rankings, idleness has drawbacks for your website in a number of ways.

For example, link building is one factor affected by lack of monitoring. Link building is when you try to get other websites to link back to yours.

Since search engines factor in links, having more websites linking to you will help your ranking. But that’s only if the links are working.

Sometimes, a website owner might unintentionally block outside access. This and many more things will make link building futile and if allowed to go too long, can even lead to drops in SERP ranking.

This can occur to any of your pages, including your pages that rank high in SERPs. It would be harder to get back to your previous rank once it happens.

However, if you monitor your website regularly, this can be solved in no time.

Consider Outside Intervention

There can also be cases where hackers can interrupt your website. If you don’t check your website regularly, your ranking might’ve been lowered already by the time you figure it out.

Search engines despise websites that are filled with malware or hacked. Service providers can also shut down your website if they find out that it’s been hacked.

It’s understandable if you can’t monitor your website 100% of the time. So you can either use SEO tool to monitor your website for you or hire professional SEO services.

It’s true that monitoring your website regularly can be a bit too much, especially for small business or beginners. That’s where SEO tools come in.

  • Competitor Research — You can also conduct website analysis on your competitors. That way, you can figure out the types of their content, their ranking, and how they leverage social media sites.
  • Content Optimization — When it comes to SERPs, you don’t have to manually change the format of your content to fit the preference of each search engine. You can simply run it on a tool and it’ll turn out in the best format to rank on different search engines.
  • Website Audit — Instead of waiting for weeks to see the results of your website, you can use website auditing tools. With this, you can analyze information and get insights about your website in a matter of seconds.
  • Link Building — You can build links faster and more conveniently with SEO tools. You can also analyze where your website’s link building is coming from to have a better idea of how to improve it.
