The SERPs will typically show different websites. These websites will often be provided as a list of options you can click on to learn more.

The content of these websites will generally be about the same subject. That is, they will all be about the keyword that you searched for.

For example, if you search for “Thai food”, the results will likely show Thai restaurants near you or different kinds of Thai food.

The top websites in the SERPs are usually the ones that use the best SEO practices. This is because those websites are optimized for the search engine’s algorithm.

These algorithms are integral to the study of how search engine optimization works too.

What Is a Search Engine Algorithm?

A search engine algorithm is a set of rules or formula that determines each website’s relevance for a particular search.

SEO ensures that a website meets the requirements of that algorithm. As a result, the site ends up in the SERPs for certain keywords or topics.

If the site’s SEO is good enough, it’s even seen as “more relevant” or “useful” for a search than all other sites. That means it may end up at the top of the SERPs.

Search engines like Google have standards for the websites that they show in their search results. These standards are reflected as factors in their algorithms.

That’s why it’s important to consider those factors too when doing SEO. They can help you figure out what to focus on for your optimization.

To give you an idea, here some of the most important factors to consider when discussing how search engine optimization works.

1) Domain Authority

Domain authority or DA tells you how much trust your domain (roughly, your website) has gained. This is often determined by your domain’s age and number of backlinks.

Aim to have high domain authority. If you have a high DA, search engines will include you in results frequently.

That tells you DA is an important aspect of how search engine optimization works. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why.

Search engines want to show websites that are credible in their SERPs. Having a high DA helps in that matter.

Contrary to common belief, it’s not always best to use the high-competition keywords. People tend to prioritize them just because they get the most searches.

Unfortunately, there’s always the other side of the coin. Because these keywords get a lot of searches, they also get a lot of sites targeting them… hence the “high-competition”.

Due to this, it’s generally wisest to use medium- to low-competition keywords as well. These usually give you better odds for getting attention.

You should also consider using LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords. They can also help improve your ranking.

Using LSI keywords basically means you need to use ones that are related to your main keyword.

For example, say your target keyword is “SEO tutorial”. Using LSI, you would also use “easy SEO tips” or “ DIY SEO for beginners” because they’re related.

That said, make sure to use keywords strategically. Don’t just put them on your website randomly.

You should also use the best keyword density for your content. Generally speaking, the ideal keyword density is 1% to 3%.

There are a number of tools and websites out there that can help you calculate keyword density. Just remember to monitor Google’s updates in case they affect ideal keyword density for SEO.

Currently, search engines choose to show websites with unique or original content. Thus you should make sure to avoid posting others’ work on your website.

Google and other search engines can check if your content is unique. It’s obviously not ideal for them to discover your content is only copied from another website.

With that said, it’s best to find and study your target audience before you create content. Doing this can have an effect on how search engine optimization works on your site.

Once you have a chosen an audience, create posts based on their interests. Always create the type of content that they want to see.

4) Length of the Content

The length of your content is another important aspect that affects how search engine optimization works.

That is because longer content can help you earn a higher rank in search results. Recent studies even correlate content around 2,000 words with better SERP placement.

Having long content increases the time your visitor spends on your post. When visitors spend more time on your post, this tells Google that you have valuable content.

There are many ways to do link building, and one of the best is to provide excellent content. That’s because superb content tends to attract links naturally.

At any rate, just keep link building in mind when considering how search engine optimization works. Chances are, you’ll have to do quite a bit of it for your SEO.

6) Site Speed

Google also evaluates how fast your website loads. That means site speed affects your rank in the SERPs.

There’s a reason it’s a vital factor in how search engine optimization works. Simply, it’s that having a fast loading speed provides a good user experience.

Google recognizes this, so it favors faster-loading sites in its SERPs. After all, it wants to provide the best results to its users.

7) Clean and Responsive Design

Consider having a mobile-friendly/responsive layout too. Search engines tend to prefer websites that are mobile-friendly because most people now surf the Web with handheld devices.
