Check If Your Site is in Google

You need to check first if your site is in Google’s index before doing SEO.

To do this, type your URL on the search query, and if you see results, then you’re in the index.

If the search results didn’t show any of your web pages, here are the possible reasons why:

  • Your website isn’t properly connected from other websites.
  • Your website is newly created, and thus, Google hasn’t indexed it yet.
  • The design of your website is not properly optimized for Google’s algorithm.
  • Google is continuously receiving an error when loading your website.
  • Your policy blocks search engines from displaying your website on search results.

Help Google Find Your Content

Google crawls billions of web pages. Therefore, there are instances that some websites will be missed. To prevent this from happening on your blog, you need to help Google find your content.

First, you need to check if Google can’t find your site. Do this by submitting a sitemap to Google.

A sitemap is a file on your site that tells search engines about the changes you made on the pages on your site.

If Google can’t find your site, allow Googlebot to access the JavaScript, CSS, and the image files used by your website. Disallowing the following assets in your “robot.txt” will make it hard for Google algorithm to find your content.

When Google finally finds your site, the next thing you need to do is to improve its ranking. That’s where SEO comes up.

Optimize Your Site for Google Search

Using SEO is the best way to improve your ranking. Optimizing different aspects of your website will make it easy for Google to find your content.

Many businesses use SEO to help their target audience find their content. Basically, SEO will increase your content visibility on the internet.

The process of SEO is done by SEO experts. If you don’t have any experience on doing it, then you can always to hire an SEO professionals to do it for you.

Doing SEO on a website is a complex process. It’ll make on-site and off-site changes to your site. To give you an idea about it, here’s a simple Google SEO tutorial.

Use Accurate Page Title for Your Content

Your page title should tell Google the content on your web page. Avoid using a title that’s not related to your content because it’ll confuse Google and your audience.

Use a short title that clearly describes your content. Also, consider adding your keyword on your page title. Doing this will further increase your page’s visibility on the internet.

To change the page title of your site, edit the <title> tag on your HTML.

Make Use of the Meta Description

The Meta description is a text that appears below your page title on the search result. Similar to the <title> tag, the tag for meta description is placed within the <head> element of the HTML document.

Adding Meta description is important because Google uses it as snippets for your pages. With that said, avoid using generic descriptions like “This is a web page” or “Page about muscle cars.”

Also, don’t overuse keywords in the Meta description.

Google will penalize your site if they catch you overusing keywords on your website.

Use a Simple URL

Google can easily find your site if you’re using a simple URL. For this reason, avoid using lengthy URLs with unnecessary parameters and session IDs.

The session ID is a piece of data that your website assign to the specific user. This is needed to keep track of visitor activity.

Consider creating descriptive categories and filenames for the documents on your website. Doing this helps in making a simple URL.

URLs that are based on your website’s structure will make it easier for your visitors to navigate your site.

Use SEO on Your Content

Aside from your website, you should also use SEO on your content. Unlike before, Google now prioritizes sites that have high-quality content instead of the ones that use a lot of keywords.

That said, it’s important for you to make your content interesting to get organic traffic or referrals. To do that, you need to provide the content that your audience wants to see.

Don’t add a blog post that has numerous spelling and grammatical mistakes. Your content should be easy to read and avoid copying or reposting content from other sites. Google looks at the format of and the quality of content in ranking websites.

Also, don’t forget to use keywords in your content to make it easier to find.

In addition to that, consider posting new content regularly. It’ll not only keep your existing visitor base coming back, but also bring in new visitors.

Help Google Understand Your Images

Finally, you must name your images properly.

Avoid using filenames like “image1.jpg”, “pic.gif”, “1.jpg”. Instead, use a descriptive filename and alt attribute description for images. Google will use the alt text to understand what’s in your picture.

By applying correct image filenames and appropriate alt text, you can boost your site’s SEO.
