Many consultants and small business owners have a hard time getting traction with their internet marketing. They may get a website, setup some social media accounts, try some SEO, and still get little to no measurable results.

They may even hire an individual or firm to help them and still it’s much of the same… nothing.

At this point, they often say “it doesn’t work” or “I don’t have time for this”.

But in order to start building up your own Pervasive Presence you need a solid foundation.  Part of that foundation is making sure you are properly setup in Google My Business and Google Maps.

That’s why today I want to talk to you more about how these play an important role to getting more local customers.

Setting Up Google My Business Can Get You More Local Customers

In a previous blog post I talked using Pervasive Presence™ framework to help you get more local customers.  It was in that blog post that I talked about the foundation of Pervasive Presence™: First Gear.

So before I talk more about setting up Google My Business I want to touch briefly upon the First Gear of Pervasive Presence™ so you can see how Google My Business (and Google Maps) helps set the foundation.

First Gear of Pervasive Presence™

The first stage to implementing Pervasive Presence™ sets the foundation for your internet marketing.  If you don’t do this right, you’ll not be very successful at the other stages.

There are three elements of the “1st Gear”:

  1. Website
  2. Local SEO
  3. Google Business & Maps

Let’s talk about each in some detail.

Website

Your website is the foundation of everything you do online.  You need a website that is designed right to help guide your customers.

The biggest mistakes people make with their website is:

  • They don’t get the website built by someone who really knows that they are doing.
  • They only build the website to look good, and not to help the visitor.

When someone visits your website, you have TWO TO THREE SECONDS to answer these three questions:

  1. Who are you.  What do you do as a business (eg. carpet cleaning).
  2. How can you help them.  What services do you want to be know for (eg. getting the really tough stains out).
  3. What do they do next to take the primary action you want them to take.  Remember this is the primary action… for many businesses wanting local clients this is a phone call so your phone number needs to be very easily seen.

Once you get those three points covered, then you can go further into detail as to why you are the supplier of choice for your visitor.

Local SEO

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is more of a longer term strategy and a key aspect of Pervasive Presence™.  The goal of combining Local SEO with Google Maps is to help ensure, long term, that you come up in the top places in search when someone looks for your services in Google.

Local SEO helps fill in the gaps, and covers more search terms, than just doing Google Business and Maps.

Google Business & Maps

Google Business (also known as Google My Business) and Google Maps are probably two very underutilized tools at your disposal.  These two things, which are really linked together, can alone help you build up your local business…

If done right.

The first step is to make sure you claim your Google My Business.  If the listing is already showing up when you Google your company name, then there will be a link to claim it if you haven’t already.

If your business doesn’t show up yet, maybe because it is a relatively new business, then you can go to Google My Business and create an account.

Once you have an account you should configure it to have your company details.  Google Maps is linked to Google My Business, so what you do on Google My Business affects your Google Maps listing.

But that is the BARE MINIMUM.

Really to get the best results from your Google My Business it needs to be optimized REGULARLY.  There is a lot of things that need to be done on a monthly basis to help it rise in the rankings and stay there.

Using Google My Business (GMB) is more than just claiming it and setting it up… you need to optimize it.  You need to give it as much consideration as you do your website.

In the above chart, you can see how optimizing GMB got measurable improved results:

  • More local post views
  • More discovery searches
  • Almost three times more search views
  • More map views
  • More website traffic

That is just an example of what is possible.  The important takeaway for that chart is to show you that the results are very measurable.

Results like this are achieved by both making sure the GMB listing is setup properly and it is optimized continually over time.

When analytics like we show in the chart above, you can literally see the effects of your marketing, both on and offline.  It takes the mystery out of how effective your marketing is.

Google My Business Setup

It’s very important to properly setup your GMB listing for success.  This is often your client’s first impression of your business on the internet (they will often see this before they see your website).

So if it looks like garbage, then you will get poor results.

Using the right images are essential making the GMB listing both appealing and also tell Google what your business is about.

You also need to make sure you have the Info section setup to properly represent your business (to help it also get found on Google).

Google My Business Continual Optimization

GMB is not something you can just setup and forget.  Otherwise you’ll get a spike in results and then you may settle back down to where you started.

Instead, like SEO, you need to be continually be doing things to help improve your rankings and maintain them.  This includes getting more reviews, adding pictures, using posts, etc.

When done properly on a regular basis (a few times a month) you will climb in results and get more clients.  We have been able to get measurable results for our clients within three months (and often much quicker than that).

Also, it has been shows that your Adwords costs will be less for the same results if you properly setup your GMB account.  (That’s why Adwords is the Second Gear of Pervasive Presence™).

Working With An Expert at Google My Business

There is a lot to GMB.  There is a lot to do to help improve the ranking… and what you need to do changes as Google changes regularly.

Plus there are things you need to do with things like images to help ensure you get found for your products and services… it’s similar to SEO but for GMB.
