How do you define search engine optimization?

Search engine optimization or SEO is a process that’s often used by businesses and online marketers. This helps them increase their sales or reach.

But how’s that possible? Many people have that question in mind too.

That’s why in today’s blog post, I’m going to define search engine optimization.

This blog post will help you understand how SEO works and how it can help your business.

Having said that, let’s now define search engine optimization!

How Do You Define Search Engine Optimization?

You need to know how to define search engine optimization as this will help you make decisions about that part of your business. Even if you’re not doing any SEO for your brand yet, you eventually will… because you have to.

SEO is no longer something optional. That’s because it’s integral to how people find you on the Internet and how you establish your brand online.

Knowing how to define search engine optimization gives you better insight into that. It can help you make plans for your SEO, whether they involve doing it yourself or calling in an expert.

That said, let’s now define search engine optimization or SEO.

Define Search Engine Optimization

So how do we define search engine optimization?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is a process that increases the number and quality of visitors to a website. It mainly increases your visitors by improving the rank of your website on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Rank means the position of your website on search results. Where this is concerned, higher is better.

That’s because the first website in the search results gets more traffic. Particularly, the 1st website in search results gets 42% of the traffic.

Compare that to the second, which gets 11% and the third, which only gets 8%.

The process of SEO will change different aspects of your website and do other things to get you closer to those top positions in SERPs.

The changes made by SEO will thus help people and search engines find your website easily.

Importance of SEO for Business

You can’t define search engine optimization, without also talking about its importance for business.

You’ll experience tough competition if you market your business on the Internet. The only way to keep up with your competitors is to boost your online visibility.

As I pointed out earlier, one way to do that is to reach the top spot in search engine results pages. Websites that are in the top part of the search results often get more traffic.

SEO can help you there. Given the way it boosts your online visibility, it can open a lot of possibilities for your business.

That’s one of the best ways to I define search engine optimization for business.

How SEO Works

Now since I’m here to define search engine optimization, I’m also going to discuss how it works.

For most people, SEO involves making changes (for the better) to their websites. The changes are based on the algorithm of search engines like Google.

The algorithm of a search engine is a set of rules or a formula that determines the rank of a web page in the SERPs. Remember that when you define search engine optimization.

Basically, SEO is not a one-time process. It’s something that has to be kept up since search engines’ algorithms are constantly changing.

That’s why you need to frequently check Google’s updates to keep your SEO method up to date. Using a wrong or outdated SEO method will only make your website rank lower.

Now when you define search engine optimization, you should remember that both on-site and off-site processes may be involved.

Off-site SEO processes include the promotion of your website on other places online. On-site processes obviously include tasks like fixing your site’s design, optimizing its content, etc.

It’s also worth noting that links play a big part in both types of SEO. Managing outbound links is an on-site process while creating inbound ones (also called backlink building) is an off-site process.

An inbound link is a hyperlink on other websites that points to a web page on your site. Outbound links are links directing a visitor of your website to another specific webpage or website.

Both can affect your SEO.

Now to define search engine optimization properly, let’s go deeper into the 2 main types of SEO. Again, those are on-site SEO and off-site SEO.

Understanding On-Site SEO

If you define search engine optimization, make sure that you understand on-site SEO.

On-site SEO deals with SEO processes implemented on the website itself.  Some on-site SEO processes are basic tasks that even a beginner can easily finish.

Having knowledge in editing HTML can help you do some on-site SEO processes.

To give you an idea about it, here are some examples of on-site SEO. You can do the following if you have familiarity in basic HTML editing:

1) Page Title

When you define search engine optimization of the on-site type, you usually have to learn about things like this.

The page title can be seen at the top of an Internet browser or in the window tab of an open web page.

Your page title must clearly describe the content of the page. However, it should be short so search engines can find it easily.

SEO professionals sometimes add a keyword to the page title. This can help in increasing its visibility on the Internet.

That’s because the page title is a prominent component of a web page. Putting a keyword in it is a “sign” to search engines that the keyword is integral to the content of the page.

2) Meta Description

To define search engine optimization, you must know the meta description as well.

A meta description is an attribute in your meta tags that includes a description of your page. It only appears in search results, below the link of your website.

The meta description is text that appears below your page title in the search result. As with the page title, the tag for meta description is placed within the <head> element of the HTML document.

Adding a meta description is an important part of on-site SEO. Why?

Well, it’s not technically useful in getting high rank in SERPs. However, it’s helpful in getting user click-through.

With that said, make sure to describe the content of your webpage precisely. Avoid using generic descriptions like “This is a web page” or “Page about muscle cars”.

People will be more likely to click on your website if the meta description tells them what they can see on your website.

I recommend descriptions between 50–160 characters. Google usually truncates them past 155-160 characters.

3) Content

If you define search engine optimization, your content will be involved.

The content of your website will be affected by the SEO process. Many SEO processes are done on your content to ensure that it’s of good quality.

Apart from having good quality, make sure that the content of your website is original. Avoid posting content that you copied somewhere else on the Internet.

The reason for that? Your content will determine your online visibility and SERP ranking.

Google’s algorithm currently prioritizes web pages with unique high-quality content. That’s why your content is involved if you define search engine optimization.

Also, the content that you have should provide value to your visitors. Showing that your website can provide value is one of the best ways to reach the spot in SERPs.

That’s because it can help you earn backlinks. Many websites will link to your content if it’s informative, useful, or entertaining.

Doing SEO on content also involve using keywords. Adding keywords will increase the content’s visibility on the Internet.

When people search for the keyword, there’s a chance that your content will appear in the search results.

Just a reminder to avoid overusing keywords in your content. Google might penalize you if you’re using too many keywords in your website.

That’s the best way to define search engine optimization on-site changes.

Understanding Off-Site SEO

I’m now going to define search engine optimization of the off-site type.

Off-site SEO is concerned with optimization techniques made outside of your website. Despite that, off-site plays a major role in improving your SERP ranking.

Off-site SEO usually involves promotional methods such as posting advertisements and building backlinks. Backlinks are links on other websites that lead to your website.

Having backlinks is important because it shows the search engines that you provide high-quality content. Getting a lot of backlinks will help you reach the top spot in the SERPs.

But aside from backlink building, the following are also considered off-site SEO:

  • Guest posting,
  • Social media marketing,
  • Social bookmarking, and
  • Forum marketing, among others.

When I define search engine optimization of the off-site type, most beginners often feel a little confused. It’s a complex process, after all.

That’s why it’s usually best to let SEO companies in your area do this for you. If you live in Cincinnati, for instance, try to get a Cincinnati SEO company to handle your off-site SEO and explain it to you.

A single mistake in off-site SEO can result in serious consequences. Your website could go down in ranking or could be removed from SERPs.

Obviously, that’s not a risk you want to take.
