“7 Tips for Building Your Business on Instagram” written by Mike Marko.

Building your business on Instagram isn’t a Herculean task.

It is one that needs a bit of marketing savvy, however.

I’ve seen a lot of people struggle with building a business on Instagram because they don’t know how to use the platform to promote a brand.

Sometimes, it’s even because they don’t know much about social media marketing in general.

If you’re one of those people, I’m here to help. A good bit of my time as an online marketer is spent helping clients build their brands on different social networks.

Today, we’ll be focusing on Instagram in particular. So if you’re ready, read on to learn how a pro would go about building your business on Instagram.

Building Your Business on Instagram Right

Before I show you my tips for building your business on Instagram, let me make something clear.

Building your business on Instagram is an effort-intensive project.

It’s not necessarily hard or even complex. As I suggested earlier, it doesn’t take a Hercules to do it.

What it does take, though, is dedication and effort.

In fact, that’s true of all social media marketing, because it relies so much on sustained presence and activity.

So unless you’re willing to put in the hours, you might as well just hire a digital marketing expert to do it for you right now. On the bright side, that would assure you that an actual pro is handling that part of your business for you.

But if you’d like to learn how to do it yourself, then let’s go ahead and get started on my tips.

Follow these if you want to learn the best ways of building your business on Instagram.

advantages and disadvantages of instagram1) Find Your Audience

I’ve talked in my other Instagram posts about engagement being one of the biggest reasons you should be building your business on Instagram.

After all, this is one of the social media platforms where brands see the highest engagement rates.

But you can only get engagement — especially meaningful engagement — if you’re sending your messages to (or posting your content for) the right audience.

So one of the first things to do when building your business on Instagram is to find your audience.

You can do that in several ways. Here are some, to get you started:

  • Check your competitors’ followers (because chances are, they’ll be interested in your goods/services too). Try following them or reaching out to them with content or offers.
  • Find the hashtags associated with your brand and products/services or niche. Use those in posts to get noticed by your target audience.
  • Make use of your business’s buyer persona. You can use that as a guide to figuring out what your target audience might be talking about on Instagram or where they are on the platform.

Note that audience discovery is an ongoing task in social media. So even once you’ve begun posting on the platform, you still have to continue researching your audience and fine-tuning your targeting.

Use Instagram’s features for that. For instance, you can use Analytics to discover your audience demographics.

You can also use your posts to discover more segments or users who belong in your target audience. For example, you can ask your existing followers to tag other users they think might be interested in your content/brand.

2) Invest in Creative Staff or Resources

Building a business on Instagram is all about posting great content.

And frankly, if you don’t have a creative hand yourself, you’ll need all the help you can get.

Try looking among your existing employees for creative talent. Ask if any of them are good at photography or design.

You can also just hire someone expressly for creating your content. Most companies can benefit from getting a go-to designer or photographer for all marketing visuals, anyway.

If you have a bit of creative talent yourself, you can also hone it by getting tutorials or software that can help you, like Canva or Photoshop.

This is extremely important. Building a business on Instagram is simply impossible if you have no way of producing great graphic content.

So unless you invest in or prepare for this early on, you may as well give up on the idea of building a business on Instagram.

3) Establish Your Branding Early On

Building your business on Instagram means establishing your brand on it.

To do that, you need to have a brand image, style, and message from the start.

So when planning out how you’ll be building your business on Instagram, ask these questions:

  • What visual imagery should be the mark of my brand?
  • What style goes best with my brand? How can that style be expressed in content?
  • What visual elements do my existing customers already associate with my brand?

Questions like these can help when you’re building your business on Instagram.

Take note that theme can also be an expression of style, by the way.

For instance, if all of your Instagram posts have a consistent theme, they can technically establish “the mark of your brand” without being visually consistent.

There’s nothing to prevent you from adding some visual consistency to that scenario, though.

For instance you could make sure all of your posts on a particular theme show predominant use of your brand’s colors.

4) Create a Content Calendar

If you’ve followed the earlier tips for building your business on Instagram, you should now have the following:

  • An audience.
  • A means of producing content.
  • A means of branding that content.

The next thing you need to do now is to create a content calendar.

A content calendar will let you plan out the topics of your content for optimal effect. That can help you release certain posts at the time when they’re likeliest to be received well.

This can also help you time your Instagram marketing so it agrees with the other events in your business calendar.

For example, if you have a particular event coming up, you can schedule content to support it in the weeks before.

This sort of harmony in your operational calendars is vital when building your business on Instagram.

5) Learn How to Caption

There’s an art to captioning Instagram posts. While a good photo or video should technically be enough to convey your message, there’s no reason not to use the caption.

A good caption can support a good image. A great one can take it to the next level.

So what makes a good caption?

Well, as far as building your business on Instagram goes, it would need the following:

  • A reminder of your brand, its products, or vision/mission.
  • A call to action.
  • A reason for the viewer to become even more invested in the image than before, or for him to look at it again and possible engage it in new ways. This can be a story relating to that image, for example.
  • The right hashtags. In fact, hashtags are so important when building your business on Instagram that they’re the focus of my next tip.

6) Learn How to Use and Make Hashtags

As on Twitter, hashtags are integral to the way content is organized and discovered on Instagram.

Use the right hashtags and you can seriously amplify your content’s reach.

Use the wrong ones and you’ll barely get the attention your content merits.

So using hashtags is important when building your business on Instagram. The trick is to do your research.

Find out which hashtags are most relevant to your audience and niche, as well as your business.

Then develop content for those hashtags.

You can also find the hashtags for events that you’re creating content for (e.g. the holidays), then just use them for those posts, along with hashtags for your business.

You can create your own hashtags too for movements, promos, products, or events specific to your business.

Be sure to incorporate your brand’s name in the hashtag, though. That makes sure it actually helps you in building your business on Instagram.

7) Strike Up Beneficial Partnerships

When building your business on Instagram, you want to take every opportunity possible to broaden your reach.

Partnerships with both influencers and other brands can help with that.

You can work with other brands by creating collaborative projects that benefit both of you. Look for brands that have an audience overlap with you.

You can also work with influencers, who are Instagram users with a large following. Tapping the right influencer can expose your brand to thousands of new prospects in a single post.
