You may have heard about Pinterest, and are now wondering if you should be using Pinterest as a social media marketing platform for you business.

When we started marketing online, we didn’t pay Pinterest too much attention.  We were primarily focused on Facebook because that was what we knew.

Turned out that was a huge mistake.  But is it right for your business?

But before you add Pinterest to your marketing plan, let’s talk about both the advantages of Pinterest and, of course, the disadvantages of Pinterest

But first… let me answer the most basic question.

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest derived from two separate words, pin and interest. It is a web and mobile application company that operates a photo sharing website. It has defined itself as “the world’s catalog of ideas” or a visual discovery, collection and storage tool.

Pinterest was founded by Ben Silbermann, together with Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp, in March 2010 and is now a huge success, making it one of the top social media networks. It is considered as the darling of social media.

Nine months after the launch, Pinterest already had 10,000 users registered. It slowly started to get noticed by magazines and started to make appearances in articles. In December 2011, the site became one of the top largest social network services.

Advantages of Pinterest

As a user myself of this social media site, I find it really interesting to browse and search for any ideas or pins that would show up on my feed. It thrills me knowing that I will be learning a lot on its DIY’s (Do It Yourself), sometimes with step by step photos provided which are very easy to understand.

Pinterest can be linked to your other social media accounts too… like Facebook and Twitter. Pinterest is one of the leading social media. That means you can get a wider range of target audience.

If you are a blogger like I am, it’s also an excellent place for promoting your articles or marketing your content.

There is something for everyone to enjoy on Pinterest. You would always get results after searching on what interests you most.

Pinterest is very beneficial for blogs and websites. Images that are posted on Pinterest boards and pins shared can be linked backed to the original site: that’s huge of the advantages of Pinterest.

Approximately 150 million users monthly which means this is a great platform to market your business.

Keep everything organized and share the things you love all in one place by creating your own board and adding pins to it. You can always go back and view whenever you want.

There are a lot of categories to choose from which can really catch attention, each having vibrant and wonderful pictures attached. You get to discover a lot of things you do not know yet and will really keep you interested to look for more.

Can teach you what you want to learn by just looking at the pictures or video. Example with girls, there is a step by step tutorial on how to get makeup done.

You can download Pinterest application available in smartphones. It’s a beautiful app that offers a rich experience that is very similar that of the full Web site. It’s great for creating boards, pinning items, sharing items, and even editing profile information.

You will get notifications on who pinned, followed, and reacted to your pins and boards. By that, you will know who your potential customers or target audience are.

And… you can also follow boards from other users and always get updated on their new pins.

Disadvantages of Pinterest

Along with Advantages are some Disadvantages of Pinterest…

The main advantage of Pinterest can also be its biggest disadvantage: it relies on images. That means you need to be very mindful of the images you post because it is the image that will attract followers. Poor pictures will have people that follow you skip past you in their feed and not read the message in your description.

There is no protection functionality to prevent others from stealing your images stored in a user account. Along those same lines, Pinterest makes it too easy to steal other people’s work.

There is a lesser range of Men who are Pinterest users. 81% are female which means your business designed for men may not totally succeed.

Instagram is only an iPhone and Android app. If you have Windows mobile, Blackberry, or Linux it won’t work. That means you won’t be reaching all your target audience.

The search function often turns up completely unrelated items to what is being searched. This may be more related to the fact of mis-tagging the pins.

If your image does not sell, you pin will not be clicked on. Pinterest relies entirely on looks and not really text to sell ideas. You could have a great product but it can be easy to misrepresent what you offer in Pinterest.

Using Pinterest to Your Business’s Advantage

Now that you know the advantages and disadvantages of Pinterest and IF you’re ready to use it for your business, then there are some things that you should remember.

Just like with every marketing platform, Pinterest has its pros and cons. Personally, I think that using Pinterest as a social media marketing tool is a good idea. It’s there, it’s free, and it’s easy to use — so, why not take advantage of it, right?

1) Learn the Terms

Just about all of the social media platforms have terminology specific to them and their users. Twitter has tweets, mentions, and hashtags, for example.

The same thing goes for Pinterest. You need to get to know the terms its users employ on it, and what each term means.

Some of the terminologies to acquaint yourself with are “Pinners”, “Pins”, and “Boards”. Interact with other users and play around with the platform a little to learn more about these and what they are.

2) Learn the Categories

As mentioned, one of the disadvantages of Pinterest is that it’s purely visual. Thus, familiarizing yourself with the categories is important.

Why?

You can reach success as long as you can relate your business to the most popular categories on the platform. But if you don’t understand how those categories work… well, let’s just say you’re in trouble.

Your target audience may never get wind of your content if you don’t put it in the right categories. As such, pay attention to how you classify your images on Pinterest.

3) Create the Right Images

Image is everything here. So, when you’re sharing content on Pinterest, always use the right ones. The right ones represent your business and are relevant to your target audience.

Also, the right image should spark interest in the minds of users. The image should push them to dig deeper and get to know who you are.

Using bright colors and only having a brief title for the pins that you will share is recommended.

If you want to stand out more in the Pinterest feed, you can also consider using taller or longer pins. This is because the pins are organized into columns.

4) Don’t Forget Your Links

It is very important to have your links in the description of your pins. The links that are best to use are the ones that redirect to your product, landing, or home page.

No matter how simple your pin is, always add your link in it!

5) Pin as Much as Possible

As with other social media platforms, Pinterest thrives on activity. So stay active by posting whenever possible.

This helps because when you have more content, more pinners will flock to your boards and scroll through.

Anyway, no matter how many pins you post, your account will not be flagged down as spam. This means you won’t be overwhelming your followers with your pins.

So, pin away!

6) Have a Call-To-Pin

This is your call to action. But on Pinterest, it’s called “call-to-pin”.

Have your call-to-pin in your description box. With this, you increase your chances of getting more engagement.

7) Follow Competitors & Trends

These will play a major role in the success of your Pinterest marketing. You might be wondering why you have to follow your competitors.

Well, it’s because it makes it easier to monitor them.

Also, hop on the trends on the network. You can do this by finding trending keywords that are relevant to your business. Keep in mind that you should also use these keywords in your titles and descriptions.

You may also follow other influencers on the platform. It would also be great way if you can engage with users on the network by leaving comments on their pins.

8) Always Remember It’s a Social Community

Since the platform is dominated by images, it is easy to forget that it’s still a social media platform. It’s a community.

And this is exactly what you have to remember at all times.

You have to engage with the community to get the most out of it. Enable comments and messages you can communicate with everyone freely.

Also, don’t just live on Pinterest! Share your pins on your other social networks as well.
