What Is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

SEO is a method of internet marketing where you focus on getting organic (non-paid) search engine results. It means that when someone types in a specific term into a search engine like Google that you try to show up as close you can to the top of the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Page). SEO includes both technical and creative elements to help improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in search engines.

There are many aspects of SEO ranging from the words you include on your website to other site links from the web to your target page. Sometimes SEO is simply arranging your website to make sure it is structured in a way that search engines understand.

SEO isn’t just about building search-friendly websites. You also have to include the visitor experience too.  You want to help ensure that the visitors find what they want and you “end search” for them with your content.

Why Does My Website Need SEO?

The majority of web traffic originates from search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Now I know social media and other types of traffic can get visits to your website, search engines are the primary method of navigation for most internet users.

What do you do when you want to find something online? You mostly likely use a search engine.

Look at it this way: search engines are unique in that they provide targeted traffic. People type in specifically what they are looking for and the search engine then gives them the closest matches. If search engines can’t find your site, or can’t add your content to their databases, you miss out on some pretty cool opportunities for traffic.

Search queries are the words users type into the search box. These words carry a lot of value because the traffic is VERY targeted. It has been shown that targeted traffic to a website can provide exposure and revenue like no other form of marketing. That means investing in SEO can have an exception rate of return compared to other types of marketing and promotion.

Why Can’t Search Engines Find My Site Without SEO?

While search engines keep getting smarter, they still need help. There is a limit to how search engines can operate. There are millions and millions of websites… you can imagine how difficult it is to try to rack and stack these different websites would be without some “guidance.”

That is why the right SEO can net you thousands of visitors and increased attention, BUT the wrong moves can hide your website deep in the search results where you won’t get found (or you may not even show up in search results).

Not only does SEO make content available to search engines, SEO can also help boost rankings so that the content can be placed where your ideal traffic can more easily find it. The internet becomes more competitive each day, and those companies who use SEO have an advantage in attracting new visitors and customers.

Can I Do SEO Myself?

SEO is pretty complex, but most people can easily understand the basics. Even knowing some of the basics can make a HUGE difference. Free SEO education is available all over the internet, including from the blog on this website. Combine this with some practice and you are well on your way to getting good at SEO.

Depending on your available time, your wiliness to learn, the complexity of your website, and the competition for your keywords, you may decide you need an expert to handle things for you. Companies that practice SEO for other companies can vary: some have a highly specialized focus, while others may take a broader more general approach.

In any case, it’s good to have a firm grasp of core concepts so that you can intelligently make the right decisions for your needs.

What Is SEM?

While this article is on SEO, I want to talk briefly about SEM (Search Engine Marketing). SEM is different than SEO in that SEO is traffic through unpaid of free listings, while SEM is buying traffic through paid search lists (ads).

I’m going to talk about SEM in a future article.
