“How To Get Backlinks For SEO | Off Page SEO Tips” written by Mike Marko.
So you build you website, created content, did some on page SEO (search engine optimization), and then clicked PUBLISH.
What happened next?
Probably nothing but the sound of crickets.
That’s because people aren’t going to find your website and your content by clicking the publish button alone.
One of the best ways to get traffic to your website is to get found in the search engines like Google and Bing…. and that means that you really need to be on the first page of search results if not in the not three places. And the key to getting there is link building, or in other words Off Page SEO.
That’s why today I want to talk to you about how to get backlinks for SEO… backlinks that will actually get you results. And traffic!
How To Get Backlinks For SEO
Link building is the MOST important and challenging SEO skill.
It’s actually a combination of several skills: content creation mastery, sales, programming, planning structure building, psychology, and gold old fashion marketing… that is if you want people to consistently link to your site.
And in order to get more search engine traffic then link building is a must… so very often people speed up that process by artificially building backlinks to their content.
Wait… What Is A Backlink?
A backlink is really a hyperlink on a website (you know that part of text that you click to take you to more content, sometimes on a different website). When you have hyperlinks to your website page from another website (and from social media sites).
So the more off page SEO backlinks you have to your site, the better. They each act like vote of confidence in your content in the eyes of search engines. Basically they tell the search engines, “hey, I think this content is good enough to link to from my website.”
The Key To Good Anchor Text
Anchor text is the text in the content linking to your website page. More specifically, its the text hyperlinked to point to your website. As an example, THIS IS ANCHOR TEXT that is hyperlink to point to my main website page.
Anchor text is a great way of telling the search engines what your website page is about. So if your website page is about “How to SEO Blog Posts“, and that is your long tail keyword, then hyperlinking that text in a piece of content on a different website helps strength those “votes” we just mentioned.
Now if you have all your anchor text using the same keyword… that’s bad. Because it looks like your are doing off page SEO (you don’t want to let Google know what you’re really doing… I know, a bit counter-intuitive) and you won’t get much credit from search engines for the effort. So you want to use a bunch of different anchor text on different sources. It’s often called backlink diversity.
Referring Domains For Off Page SEO
The term, referring domains, means the different sites that are referencing your website content. For example if you have ten articles linked to your website page from the same source then there is only one referring domain.
You want to have as many referring domains as possible. If all your links come from only a couple of sources then they won’t carry as much weight as when there are links coming from as many referring domains as there are links (an extreme case).
In the above chart, it shows that there was a spike of referring domains at the beginning of October, and then an additional referring domain was added over time. This is a reasonable profile for referring domains.
Whereas in the above chart, most of the referring domains where created early October and then… almost nothing. This a poor referring domain profile.
Building Backlinks Today: How The Game Has Evolved
There was a brief time in SEO history where you could build thousands of spam links and watch your site climb to the top of the first page. Those days are long gone.
Make no mistake: Black hat SEO techniques can still work. But they’re not nearly as effective as they used to be. And the results are extremely short lived. And they can really hurt your website long term.
SEOs that do well today dedicate serious resources (time, money, and skilled labor) towards their link building campaigns.
